Harry Potter Science Fiction

People around the world have been swept away with Harry Potter and endeavor to learn all they can about the Harry Potter science fiction. The problem with this notion is that Harry Potter books and films are not science fiction at all and are instead wonderfully produced fantasy works. The difference between science fiction and fantasy can be argued to be major as well as minor. Fantasy can take you anywhere and the only limitations are that of your imagination while science fiction has the boundaries of science. As both fantasy and science fiction continue to entertain us and progress the lines between them blur and much fantasy can be found in science fiction and visa versa.

Whether Harry Potter is fantasy or science fiction one thing is certain; the series has cult popularity and following among young and old alike. Both the book series and the movie series begin with an 11 year old Harry Potter discovering he is the son of wizards. The first book, published in the United Kingdom in 1997 was titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and as it and the sequels gained popularity the first movie titled the same was released in 2001. The final book titled Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released in 2007 with midnight parties of fans who could not wait another moment for the newest and final Harry Potter. The final movie will be split in two separate films with a projected release in 2010 and 2011.

Both the books and the films are heavy in special effects and fantastical ideas. Our introduction to Harry Potter depicts subtle magic as Harry communicates with a snake and somehow releases it in a zoo. Owls persistently deliver the news of Harry’s acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the giant Hagrid displays magic with his umbrella before Harry begins his first year at Hogwarts. Each book ages Harry one year and one year at Hogwarts School. We are taken to a world of magic, flying brooms, bad wizards and teachers, giant spiders and mythological beings with every book or film. Fantasy or science fiction, Harry Potter has entertained and introduced children and adults to a great new world where anything can happen and the struggle between good and evil persists.
